Those
tasseled things hanging for sale are used by women, who entwine and braid
them with their hair, making it appear thicker and longer and giving the
braid weight and stability. The tassels swing gaily from one side to the
other when the women walk. Rickshaw drivers often decorate their scooters
with such ornaments and hair ribbons; I don't really know the exact implication
of this custom, though it can be somewhat guessed at I think, considering
how local society doesn't allow for much interaction between its male and
female members. Such hair embellishments used to be very common on the Indian
subcontinent, in Sri Lanka and Nepal. Nowadays they're somewhat out of fashion
and not seen so much anymore. |
