Karachi

a friendly Karachi policeman
On the day of our departure from Pakistan, we returned to the city of Karachi from the airport, where we'd arrived from Lahore, for some last hours of shopping. Mainly we needed to buy fresh fruit for my kids, who, having grown up in Brazil, love papayas and guavas. Mangoes they would have appreciated very much too, but, unfortunately, it was off season for this queen of all fruit. We also bought some kilos of sweets to take back for our friends. The sweet shops of Karachi have, among other types of sweets, a delectable selection of rasgullahs and barfis, sweetmeats characteristic of the subcontinent. Those are made from a base of khoya, milk boiled down to the consistency of cream cheese. Many of the sweetmeats are dipped into sheera or a sugar syrup, and some are topped with varak, a silvery tissue made from thinly beaten sheets of pure silver. Pakistani sweets come in a great variety of colours and shapes, and are a feast for the eyes as well.
